this page contains spoilers for the game silent hill.
as silent hill 3 is a direct sequel to the first game, the prior events are very important to the story.

Silent Hill

I hope this will never come to
any use; maybe it's better if
you never know.
More than anything else, I fear
the possibility of your going
away, far from me.

But sometimes we have to
tell the truth.
That's why I'm writing this, before
I'm lost in death and oblivion.

What happened back then?
That has something to do
with who you are.

It all started 24 years ago. Coming
back from a vacation, my wife and
I found a baby on the side of the
highway. Since we were childless,
we thanked God for letting us meet
this child...this girl. We took her
home.

3 years later, my wife died, and
another 4 years later 17 years
ago I came to Silent Hill.
I heard the girl's pleas and took
her with me, not knowing why
she wanted us to go there.

And it was there that the girl went
away. Not that she actually went
anywhere, nor did she die.
"Returned to her original self"...
that's what Dahlia Gillespie said.

"Original self" ... That was the young
woman burned by her mother as a
sacrifice to God...Alessa Gillespie.

Half her soul escaped in those
flames and went on to live in a
baby...in that girl of mine. Of ours.

7 years passed before that half-a-girl
returned to Silent Hill and made
Alessa whole again. Newly
strengthened, she vowed to kill God.

God, a fetus nestled into this
sacrificial girl's womb, was
summoned with the usual rites.
This was Alessa's wish, no matter
what the outcomeeven if her
own existence were at stake.

But that wish was not granted.
My interruption meant she prayed
instead for the girl's return.
I alone couldn't bring her back.

Dahlia did itI only helped at the
birthing ceremony, to bring God out
of Alessa.

The newly-born God wailed
once and was dead.
All from that girl'sand probably
Alessa'sconscious resistance.

That's not the end.
After God had vanished in a glow
of light, Alessa reappeared and
gave me a baby.
She looked a lot like that girl so
long ago.

And then Alessa was gone, dead.
There was nothing I could have
done to help.
I simply clutched the baby to
my chest and ran off.

The whole thing felt like a dream,
but I had proof that it wasn't.
The girl was nowhere to be found,
and in my arms...the baby.

Now 17 years have passed.
It feels like only yesterday, and
again it feels like a million years ago.

I confess I had reservations at
first about raising that baby.
Could I love her?
Her existence was thoroughly
unexplainable.

I thought, "She could be that young
woman who snatched away my
beloved daughter." That led to
sadness, anger...there were times
when I put my hands around her
tiny little throat.

Several times I even considered
abandoning her.
That's what a terrible person I am.

But I decided to raise her after all.
I just couldn't seem to let her go.
When she...when you look at me,
you laugh, so...

Even now, I can't forget
about that girl.
But I love you. I have no doubts
about that. That's all I ask you
to believe.

To my precious daughter ...

Dad's Notebook, Silent Hill 3
(hover to read)

Twenty-four years before the events of Silent Hill 3, Harry Mason & his wife adopted a baby they found abandoned on the side of a highway, who they named Cheryl. Seven years later, Harry & his daughter make a trip to the town of Silent Hill, to the wishes of Cheryl.

Harry swerves his car off the road to avoid a small, child-like silhouette in the road, & gets knocked out from the crash. The two get seperated, & Harry follows small glimpses of his daughter through the nightmarish deserted city.

Cheryl's loving father never gives up search for her. He trudges through the ghost town, all while Dahlia Gillespie taunts Harry with words from her religion, the Order. He fights his way until the end, where he finds his daughter in Nowhere.

"I've been expecting you.
It was foretold by Gyromancy."

St. Alessa Gillespie
Mother of God, Daughter of God.

Harry finds out that bringing Cheryl to Silent Hill was a mistake.

Fourteen years ago, Dahlia sought out her own daughter, Alessa, to be a surrogate for the birth of the Order's God. Alessa attempted to retaliate, & in the firey ritual process, used her supernatural powers to split her being into two to stop the God's birth. One part of her became the very daughter Harry adopted years ago, Cheryl. Alessa suffered fatal, but un-healable burns covering her entire body, yet her mother used a magical incantation to keep her alive & in pain for years, hoping that one day the God could be still be born.

Thus, everything went according to Dahlia's plans; both halves of her soul are finally brought back together in the story's finale. Alessa & Cheryl together form into a radiant, celestial being; Incubator.

Immediately upon her transformation, she uses her abilities to summon lightning & kill her mother, & priestess of the Order, Dahlia. Depending on Harry's actions thus far, he could be forced to fight the Incubator, where he will kill the angel-like manifestation of his daughter.

"Thank you, daddy.
Goodbye."

Incubus, illustrated for Silent Hill's vinyl art

However, if Harry were to investigate the then-unknown liquid of Aglaophotis, he & the others that he helped throughout his journey could use it to save his daughter from this false God, & exorcise the true demon inside; Incubus.

This Baphomet-like creature emerges from within the Incubator's back, revealing the true deity worshipped by the Order. Harry defeats the demon, which immediately causes the collapse of the Otherworld.

But, even the killing of their God doesn't bring back Cheryl.

The Incubator & Harry Mason
Silent Hill Novel

Incubus erupts into a bright glow & screams in anguish, as Cheryl is heard calling out for her daddy one last time. The light fades; revealing Alessa as the world crashes around her, with a newborn baby in her arms. As her last act in despair, she hands the infant to Harry, & seals the Otherworld away. Flames drop to the ground, as Alessa reaches her hand towards Harry as her final goodbye.

Harry escapes the cursed town with his new daughter in his arms.

which ending do you think is canon? in "good," harry leaves silent hill with the newborn baby alone. though in "good+," both harry & cybil are seen escaping. cybil is never seen again, nor is she mentioned by anyone in silent hill 3.
it is possible the two simply parted ways while they both went into hiding from the order, or the game was kept ambigious so that both good endings could be considered canonical. it is something to note that in silent hill homecoming, she is mentioned by james wheeler, where it's revealed that she disappeared from silent hill without a trace.

personally, i don't consider any of the later "western" silent hill's canon outside of their own games (homecoming also has alex turn into pyramid head?!) but, i do think it's interesting that she's not mentioned at all in 3. rip queen, you looked so good sitting on the carousel.

Silent Hill 3

A bloody rabbit costume,
sitting in Lakeside Amusement Park

Heather, a seventeen year old girl, finds herself a horrifying amusement park. Bloody rabbit costumes are lying lifelessly throughout the park's welcome area. Everything is worn away, with some of the metal grate floor missing to expose a dark, endless void underneath.

Upon entering the fairgrounds, she is attacked by bandaged dogs with their heads split in two, longlegged creatures with even longer club-like arms & a singular pair of lips for faces, & squealing torsos with a head on both ends walking on long, thin & sharp blades. She narrowly escapes the monsters by running on a rollercoaster track, where she is hit by a coaster's cart.

Heather, sleeping in a diner

She wakes up, sitting in a chair at a diner. It was all just a nightmare. She heads to a payphone & calls her dad, while a strange man watches. Although she tries to gesture at him to leave her alone, he walks up to her & addresses Heather by her first name.

The man introduces himself as Douglas, a detective hired by someone who wants to speak with her.

"It's about your birth."

Silent Hill 3's save background

Heather, who is entirely creeped out by this interaction, slips away into the woman's restroom to avoid the man. A strange symbol is on a mirror; it somehow feels familiar, but it hurts her head when she tries to remember.

She attempts to escape through the window, only to find the tight alley is blocked in by a van & debris. Her only option is to go back into the mall through a different door.

This time, the mall is different. The canines & clubbed-armed beings she saw a moment ago in her nightmare are somehow here before her eyes. A gun is lying on the floor, & as she picks it up, she notices the prior owner dead on the ground as a creature is eating their body. Heather defends herself & continues looking for an escape.

"They've come to witness the beginning.
The rebirth of paradise,
despoiled by mankind."

"Float Up From Dream" by Akira Yamaoka
which uses Claudia's dialogue as lyrics

Upon gaining access to the mall's backrooms, Heather finally finds someone else in the desolate building. She tries figure out what's going on around her, but it seems the woman is interested in something else.

The strange woman, Claudia, is dressed in a religous gown, barefoot, & without eyebrows. She speaks in a strange way, almost like reciting scripture, & tells Heather that her powers are needed for the rebirth of paradise.

Heather tries to question Claudia until her head begins to pound; her vision blurs, & she drops to the ground in agony. Claudia walks away seemingly pleased.

"Remember me and your true self as well,
Also that which you must become.
The one who will lead us to paradise
With blood stained hands..."

Valtiel's first sighting

"I don't get it. What does she want me to remember?"

Despite being more confused than before, Heather is adamant on getting home. She enters an elevator, & a radio drops from below, which she sticks in her pocket.

A rusty, jail-like bar slams behind her & two bloody, fleshed monsters are seen fighting on the other side. The elevator descends, & upon exiting, she enters an even more dilapidated version of the building; everything is covered in a dark, red substance, which looks like either rust, or even blood. The dogs howl & snarl as they devour their own kind.

"Not even a kid could believe this."

She accesses the second floor of the mall by using a wire hanger to pull a ladder down. She passes by some televisions, that when turned on only show static, though she was sure she heard someone say "Daddy."

Heather climbs a defunct escalator, & comes across a door with a red cresent moon. The door also has the same symbol she saw before in the restroom, but in blue. Upon it is a poem written in red which reads...

"Piling up the 300th day and night
From beyond the door, cries of pain are heard
And the final destination has become real
Though not a blessed beginning"

The Split Worm

After cracking a nut to find a moonstone inside, she is able to insert it into the strange door & decend down a ladder.

What she finds below is a giant worm-like being, with thick pale skin & purple blotches that resemble veins & bruising underneath. It two huge, fleshy flaps, almost like lips, that it can split open to reveal its face; with no eyes or discernible features, just a gaping mouth with teeth that look like a human's. Thin strips of muscle & goo can be seen connecting its body parts together, as well thicker flesh tubes tangling inside of its maw.

As the creature slinks between the gaps of darkness in the walls, Heather is able to defeat it & finally exit the mall.

Douglas with pants on

Somehow, the shopping center has returned to normal. She passes by the diner where she dozed off, thinking to herself she may still be dreaming now or at least she wishes she was.

Before she's able to reach the subway, she's stopped by the detective again. This time, she accuses the stranger of being "one of them" & asks if he's in on this with that woman. Douglas denies the allegations, but does reveal that Claudia was the one to hire him. They both seem very confused.

He questions Heather about the monsters, but she's more concerned that the strange circumstance might have to do with her. At this point, Heather doesn't know what to believe; she still theorizes he was the one to "drag her into this." Flustered, she heads for the subway home, though she's starting to wonder how she's able to remember things she didn't know she knew.

"But I know there's something.
Something I've been running from,
and forgot for a long time."

A beautiful cat food ad using the font Comic Sans

The subway is just like the mall, devoid of people but full of abominations. Heather stays resilent to escape; avoiding larger monsters, a vengeful ghost that pushes visitors onto the tracks, & even a rogue subway train.

After stepping inside the very same train, it begins to start again. As the wheels abruptly screech to a hault, Heather exits & finds herself on an empty platform with a maintenance door that leads to the sewer system.

This Heather didn't read the note

No surprise that there's no other humans to be found in the underpass. Nevertheless, Heather continues through seemingly endless maze of doors & tunnels, going as far as refueling a winch with kerosine by filling up a wine bottle.

A note left by a previous employee warns of a monster lurking in the water that has killed 2 co-workers. Thankfully, somebody left a hairdryer in a storage room, which she can plug in to a conviently placed outlet & electrocute the tenticles.

Heather standing on a filthy mattress

After splashing through questionable water, Heather is able to pop out of a manhole behind a construction site. She climbs the stairs to the top level, where it appears squatters have been living, & is greeted by a giant hole with a mattress nearby; naturally, she drags the bed to the gap so she can safely jump down to the floor below.

Slipping through a mid-demolished wall, she scales the scaffolding to reach the building next-door where she's able to enter the Hilltop Center Office Building through an open window.

A headless bleeding mannequin

This building is home to a lot of different businesses, including a cafe, dance studio, art gallery, & offices for an auto shop & mannequin company.

While looking for a way out, Heather finds a home furnishing store & plays around with a bathtub. Suddenly, the drain starts overflowing with blood, & the room starts transforming; the walls & floor appear to be bleeding. Her head starts throbbing again, & she passes out on the floor.

"It's being invaded by the Otherworld.
By a world of someone's
nightmarish delusions come to life..."

A smile & ear nailed to human-like flesh; blood pulsates through its skin

Heather wakes, & is rightfully furious; kicking the tub & shouting to the empty room, "Did she do this, too?!"

The floral wallpaper is a rotten, greenish-brown color, with small cursive writing etched into it. Various walls have been replaced with chain-link & iron bars; behind them are bodies nailed to the wall, throbbing with gore & pastered in images of body parts.

That's me.
Who could have taken this photo...?

Heather's Photo
(hover to flip)

The area is adorned in various items from hospitals; medical scissors & oxygen tubes draped on the walls. Wheelchairs are left abandoned, some with cloth dolls sitting in the seat.
Indiscernible beasts are crawling on all fours; growling & snarling with their long, thick noses as they attempt to grab Heather's leg & knock her down.

Heather escapes to quieter room, which seems to once be a mental health office. She finds a note which reads "Find the Holy One. Kill her?" & she flips it over to find it's a photo of herself.

"Heather...
That's what you're called now, isn't it?"

Vincent in the therapy office

.. is how she's greeted by another strange man inside the clinic. Though he seems very familiar with Heather, she does not recognize him. He introduces himself as Vincent, & assures her now to worry.

"I'm on your side."

"So you say..." Heather replies; She's not convinced. She flips the questions back to him, asking how she can know he's not with "her."

The man is appauled by these accusations, replying that he doesn't want to be lumped together with Claudia; she was brainwashed by a "crazy old hag." Though, he immediately retracts his last statement, saying that calling the woman a "hag" may be a little too cruel...

"She is your mother, after all."

Heather & Vincent in front of peculiar writing

"My mother?" asks Heather. "What do you mean?"

He scoffs, wondering why her father, Harry, never told her anything. Vincent comes to the conclusion that Harry probably wanted to keep Heather on his side, so it's no surprise he'd hide the truth from his own daugther.

"Don't talk about my dad like that!"

Heather punches the door behind her & lunges quickly toward Vincent, which takes him as a surprise. He immediately apologizes, & asks her to calm down.

Heather leaving without answers

The two continue their conversation with Heather asking how he knows so much about her. Vincent confidently replies that he knows "everything," including her past.

Heather pleads to know what's going on, to which he seems surprised yet delighted she hasn't realized it yet. Knowing she won't get any answers here, she heads for the door, but not before telling Vincent;

"There's something wrong with you, too."

A caged being on the ground floor

Still not giving up hope of getting home, Heather continues to explore the warped version of the offices.

Blocking the exit of the ground floor is a circular cage with a writhing beast within. Though it looks dangerous, the creature has no interest in harming Heather. Lying in front of the confined monster is a seemingly out of place fairy tale.

Once upon a time, there was
a monster living at the gates
of a village.
It was a very scary and
a very bad monster.
It would catch people and
crunch them up with its big teeth.

The villagers were afraid of the
monster, and no one would dare
approach the gates.
Everyone was stuck inside
the village.

When the king heard about this,
he summoned his knights.
The knights eagerly rode out
to defeat the monster.

"Ha! Take that!"
Their swords slashed and their
spears flashed, but the monster
wouldn't die.
The monster tossed the knights
into its mouth one by one,
horses and all.

What was the king to do?
He fretted and fussed and paced the
floor, but could think of no solution.

Soon after, the village priestess came
to the castle. She was a very kind
and good person. The king asked
her to defeat the monster guarding
the gates.

The beginning of a fairy tale
(hover to read)

This part of the fable tells the tale of terrifying monster blocking gates of a village, trapping all of its inhabitants inside. Though the king sent knights out to slay the beast, they'd be eaten whole without so much as a flinch from the creature. A kind-hearted priestess is indroduced in the end, & the king asks her to defeat the monster.

Though the book is torn & incomplete, Heather recalls reading the story before, but doesn't remember how it ends.

Flame Purifies All: By these remains may a person find the road to Paradise.

After gathering laundry detergent, a book of matches (that Heather didn't already have, since she stopped smoking a while ago), & some pork liver, she's able to light a beautiful painting on fire to reveal a new path.

Upon entering the double doors behind the ashes, Heather finds a few more pages of the fairy tale from before.

The priestess accepted the king's
request and went to the village gates.
But when she saw the monster, she
tried to convince it with words
instead of killing it.

"Shut up, you! I'm going to eat
you up!"
The monster didn't listen to
a word the priestess said.

But she kept trying to convince
the monster to give up.
"It's wrong to eat people,
you know."

The monster grew very angry at
this and attacked her, killing her
with a single mighty blow.

The fairy tale continued
(hover to read)

Though there's only a few pages, we learn the next intersting part of the story. The priestess accepted the king's wishes, & approaches the monster. Unlike the knights from before, she decided she wasn't going to hurt it.

The evil beast didn't care for her words or reason, but the sympathetic girl kept trying. Sadly, kindness wouldn't work on this foe, and she was killed in a single blow.

Poor priestess; but here's no time to feel sad, since we still have to get home! Heather grabs a coin & sticks it into a vending machine, which spits out a can with a "Life Insurance" key inside. Not the weirdest thing you can find in a can-

The king and his people shed tears
at the death of the kind priestess.
God took pity upon them and,
granting their wishes, healed the
priestess.

The priestess opened her eyes just
as she had done every morning of
her life. She went once more to the
monster's lair.

"Fool! You wish to die again?"
"No... this time it's your turn."
The priestess had come to defeat
the monster once and for all.

As the priestess was very very
kind, she felt sad about this task.
But it had to be done.

"Swords and spears won't work.
Arrows and bullets will just bounce
off. You can't kill me,"
the monster laughed.
But the priestess used neither
sword nor spear. She chanted
but a single spell.

"TU FUI, EGO ERIS."
Do you know what happened then?
The monster let out a huge cry
and then died and vanished!

Thus the villagers were able to use
their gates once more. Everyone
lavished their gratitude upon the
priestess, and they all lived
happily ever after.

Heather reading the fairy tale's finale
(hover to read)

Remembering the locked door on the first floor, Heather head back downstairs. Inside, it looks like a massacre; On one of the tables, she finds the last few pages of the story.

The people of the village were so sad without their priestess. God, hearing their pleads, brought the girl back to life. She reluctanly headed back to the monster to defeat it.

The beast knew what she was here to do, & laughed; Swords, spears, arrows, & even bullets won't work. "You can't kill me." it mocked. But the priestess chanted a singular spell.

"Tu Fui,
Ego Eris."
